May 2006 2006 Opener ReportWe're looking at yet another great season on Lake of the Woods if the fishing we have had so far this year is any indication! The ice fishing in the Northwest Angle area was excellent this year, and we had no trouble filling out on walleye every time we went out. We didn't have the cloudy water that slowed the bite on the south end of the lake, and it showed in the action we had. We even did a few late night eelpout hunts. They run from 3 to 12 pounds, and we had a blast catching them one after another.
Once the Rainy River opened up, it was time for sturgeon fishing. We hit the river a couple of times this April, and caught several fish over 50". The biggest one was a 56 incher, and there were lots of fish in the 40"+ range.
We started our walleye season this year on the south end of the lake and had a great trip in spite of the weather. The action was fast, and we caught limits in a couple hours. The weather had the bigger fish inactive, but the lake seems to be full of those 15 inch eater fish. Comments
