2009 Midwinter Report

The 2008 season was one of the best for Angling Adventures Guiding Service.  Whether we were taking out first timers or groups that had been with us for many years we had a great time and caught a lot of fish.  Some of the highlights from the '08 season: a strong July and August walleye reef bite, lake trout expeditions resulting in several 20+ pound fish, and some amazing September crappie action.  We haven't spent much time on the ice this winter yet, but that should be changing as soon as the cold weather we have been having breaks.  2009 is shaping up to be a great year -  we are taking bookings right now and looking forward to that open water!  There will be a couple of changes for us this year.  First, Angling Adventures is adding another guide to our organization.  Lane Magnusson, a longtime area guide, will be joining us this year.  Lane knows how to show his clients a great time, and can find fish with the best of them.  We have fished with Lane a lot in the past, and know he will be a great addition to the team.  The second change?  Passports will be required when you travel back to the United States from Canada, beginning in June.  How this will affect our fishing day remains to be seen, but you will definitely need a passport when you leave the Angle by car and re-enter the U.S.  If you are planning a trip to the Angle or Canada this year, now is the time to get that passport!

2008 Midseason Report

The 2008 season has been wet and wild thus far, with a lot of cool temps and windy, rainy weather.  Much of Lake of the Woods was covered in ice on the Minnesota opener, which is almost two weeks later than usual.  The end result of all this is that water levels are high and water temps are cooler than normal for this time of year.  This hasn't cooled off the fishing though!  The average size of our walleyes has been larger this year, and there has been a lot more 24" to 27"fish caught than normal.  We've had good action on smallmouth bass this year, and landed a few pushing the 20" mark.  We have spent very little time chasing after the toothy critters this year, but our biggest northern so far is 42", and the biggest muskie is 46".  Our midsummer weather patterns are just around the corner, so the best fishing is yet to come for most species.  With the hot weather comes some hot fishing!

2007 June report

The 2007 season is underway and the fishing has been great!  We have been seeing a nice average size to our walleyes, and the reef bite is just starting to get going. We have already landed several trophy size walleyes and we are looking forward for the big fish bite in July.  Both the northern pike and muskies have been active, and we have caught good numbers of pike with several in the 20# range and lots of muskies. The big one so far is 52 inches.  The smallmouth have been giving us some good action as well; 50 a day is not unusual with plenty of 3 pounders showing up.

2006 Midseason Report

The 2006 season has been a great one so far!  The early warm weather this year kick-started the reef bite ahead of schedule, and we caught a lot of big walleyes on the humps in June.  We are in the middle of the midsummer reef bite right now, and we are catching big fish on a daily basis.  The average size has been good lately with a lot of 20"+ walleyes showing up.  The muskies have been on a tear this year.  The action was great on opening weekend, and hasn't shown any signs of slowing down soon.  The lack of weeds this year in many spots has only made it harder for them to hide.  There have been a lot of 46"-47" fish caught and following this year.  There seems to be a strong year class coming up, and in another couple years, they will all be 50 inchers!  The lack of weeds has also made smallmouth bass fishing a snap.  The rocky shorelines are a lot easier to work without  the cabbage getting in the way.  The smallies have given us some exceptional action on those days when we can tear ourselves away from the walleyes.  The crappies have been showing up on the rockpiles every once in a while,  just a little teaser for the fall months.  We're looking forward to some great crappie action this fall, along with the jumbo perch and walleye.

2006 Opener Report

We're looking at yet another great season on Lake of the Woods if the fishing we have had so far this year is any indication!  The ice fishing in the Northwest Angle area was excellent this year, and we had no trouble filling out on walleye every time we went out.  We didn't have the cloudy water that slowed the bite on the south end of the lake, and it showed in the action we had. We even did a few late night eelpout hunts.  They run from 3 to 12 pounds, and we had a blast catching them one after another.

Once the Rainy River opened up, it was time for sturgeon fishing.  We hit the river a couple of times this April, and caught several fish over 50".  The biggest one was a 56 incher, and there were lots of fish in the 40"+ range.

We started our walleye season this year on the south end of the lake and had a great trip in spite of the weather.  The action was fast, and we caught limits in a couple hours.  The weather had the bigger fish inactive, but the lake seems to be full of those 15 inch eater fish.
